My latest joint read with my son: Ghost by Jason Reynolds 📚

I can’t get enough of his middle grade and young adult novels—he tackles heavy topics with honesty, all through unforgettable characters.

This one kicks off a four-book series about a middle school track team, and the ending had my son’s head spinning. He couldn’t wait to jump straight into book two. 🏃‍♂️

One of the joys of building a life around books is getting to celebrate the people who write them.

I’m currently reading this poetry collection written by a former coworker and it’s been such a treat to dive into their work.

There’s something really special about seeing someone you know turn their creativity into something tangible and share it with the world. 📚

This week there have been a lot of hands involved in bringing Brown Hound Books to life — lifting boxes of books, unpacking inventory, scanning barcodes, and helping turn stacks of pages into something that will soon be on shelves. 📚

My family has jumped in without hesitation, and I’m so grateful for the support behind the scenes.

Turns out launching a bookstore requires a lot more heavy lifting than just reading books.

Thankful for the crew that keeps showing up. ❤️

Volunteered at the Scholastic Book Fair at my kids’ school this week and was reminded how magical it is to watch young readers discover a book they love.

There’s something special about seeing a kid pick up a book, flip through a few pages, and suddenly realize… this one is for me. 📚

For some, it’s the thrill of finding the next story they can’t wait to dive into. For others… well… the pencils, erasers, and posters were always pretty tempting too.

In honor of International Women’s Day tomorrow, this novel is a powerful tribute to strength, resilience, and the complexity of female friendship.

Here are a few “retro” reads that are living big in our house:

📖 The Outsiders – read and recommended by my eighth grader.
We’ve read the book, listened to the audiobook, and even saw the play on Broadway. When a story moves across generations and mediums like that? You know it’s timeless.

🌲 Hatchet – read (and re-read) by my sixth grader.
Survival, resilience, grit. It still captivates kids the same way it did decades ago.

🖋 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings – recommended by me.
Powerful. Honest. Enduring. A voice that continues to matter.

⚔️ All Quiet on the Western Front – recommended by my husband, Jason — whose favorite books all tend to fall into the “retro” category.
Some stories are heavy, but necessary. And they never lose their impact.

There’s something special about books that continue to find new readers year after year. They remind us that while trends change, truth and storytelling endure.

This is the book my 11-year old and I are reading together. If you have a middle schooler in your life, you should consider introducing them to books by the author Jason Reynolds.

This one is great and we loved the novel Look Both Ways, even more.

If you love a tender, character-driven story that makes you smile and sting a little… this is your book. 🤍

Just finished The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife and it completely charmed me. Frederick is flawed, lonely, quietly hopeful — and impossible not to root for.

I listened on audiobook and the narration added so much warmth and personality. Highly recommend that format if you’re an audio fan.

Bonus: it’s been picked up for a film adaptation by Netflix (release date TBD), and I can absolutely see it translating beautifully to screen.

If you loved The Road to Tender Hearts, this one carries a similar balance of quirk, grief, redemption, and heart.

Tender. Bittersweet. Life-affirming.

This month we’re reading The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku. I’m only a few chapters in, but I’m already completely engrossed — the kind of story that makes you slow down and really sit with the words.

There’s something powerful about gathering around a book that carries both heartbreak and hope.

Explored a new-to-me independent bookstore while on vacation with my family — and it was pure magic.

One of my favorite traditions? My son now asks to find the local bookstore in every new town we visit. 🥹

There’s just something about floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
They don’t just hold stories… sometimes they call to you.

I just heard from someone who attended our event over the weekend. They picked this book up while there and said it wasn’t one that they normally would have chosen for themselves. They started it this morning and are already 1/3 of the way through!

When is the last time you stumbled upon a book you wouldn’t have normally chosen, and found you really enjoyed it? What was it?
